Set up password autofill on Android with Applore Password Vault

Password autofill on Android works through one autofill service that you choose in Settings. This guide shows the setup with Applore's free Password Vault, and with Google Password Manager if you prefer the built-in option.

Short answer

Before you start

  • A phone with Android 8.0 or later. Autofill services arrived in Android 8.0.1
  • An App Lock PIN or pattern. Password Vault opens only after it. See how to lock apps on Android if you have not set one.
  • Know where your autofill settings are. On many phones they are in Settings › Passwords & accounts or Settings › Passwords, passkeys & accounts. On older versions, look in Settings › System › Languages & input › Autofill service. Samsung phones often list them under General management. Menus vary by manufacturer: search Settings for “autofill” if you cannot find them.

Steps with Applore

Password Vault is free in Applore.

  1. Open Applore and go to Privacy › Password Vault. Enter your App Lock PIN or pattern.
  2. The first time, Applore asks you to turn on autofill. Tap OK. Android’s autofill settings open.
  3. Choose Applore as your autofill service and confirm.
  4. Back in Password Vault, tap + to add a login. Enter a title, a username (you can add more than one), the website or app, and the password. Tap Generate if you want Applore to create a strong password.
  5. Choose a label such as Mail or Social Media, add notes if you like, and save.
  6. Open an app you saved a login for and tap the username field. Tap the Applore suggestion, enter your PIN, and the login is filled.

When you sign in to an app with a login Applore does not have yet, Android may offer to save it to Applore. Saved logins appear under the Apps label.

Back up your passwords

Open Password Vault, tap the menu and choose Settings:

  • Backup to Google Drive: choose your Google account to keep a backup in your own Drive.
  • Backup Directory and Auto Backup Database: pick a folder on your phone and let Applore back up automatically.
  • Generate Password CSV: create a file you can import into another password manager.
  • Turn on the option that prevents screenshots of Password Vault if you want extra privacy.

Without Applore

Google Password Manager is built into Android phones with Google services. Choose Google as your autofill service in Android’s settings. In Chrome, open Settings › Autofill services and choose Autofill with Google.2 Your passwords are saved to your Google Account and can be used on other devices where you sign in.3

Common problems

Autofill is not offered in some apps

Some apps draw their own login screens in a way Android’s autofill cannot read, so no service can fill them. Check that Applore is still selected as your autofill service, and that the saved login is linked to the right app or website.

My browser offers its own passwords instead

Browsers can have their own autofill. In Chrome, open Settings › Autofill services and choose to autofill using another service, so Chrome uses the service you picked in Android.2

Autofill stopped after a phone update

Updates sometimes reset the autofill service. Open Android’s autofill settings and choose Applore again.

What stays private

Your passwords are stored on your phone, and viewing them in Applore needs your App Lock PIN. Backups go to a folder you pick or to your own Google Drive through your own permission, and Applore’s servers never receive them. A CSV export is plain text: anyone who opens the file can read your passwords, so delete it after use. Read how Password Vault backups work, or see the overview of data and privacy in Applore. Questions

Does Applore's autofill see what I type?

Applore is not a keyboard, so it does not record your keystrokes. When you tap a login field, Android shares the form's fields with the autofill service you chose, so it can offer a match. After you sign in, Android can offer to save the login. Applore uses this on your phone and asks for your App Lock PIN before it fills anything.

Where does the backup go?

Wherever you choose. In Password Vault settings you can back up to a folder on your phone or to your own Google Drive, and turn on automatic backup. Drive backups go straight from your phone to your Google account through your own permission. Applore's servers never receive your passwords. How backups work.

Can I move my passwords to another manager?

Yes. In Password Vault settings, generate a CSV file of your passwords and import it into the other password manager. A CSV file is plain text that anyone who opens it can read, so delete it from your phone, your downloads and any shared folders as soon as the import is done.
