What is a hidden app icon on Android?

A hidden app icon means an app is installed on the phone but has no icon in the app drawer or on the home screen, either by design or because the app turned its icon off.

You can still find these apps. On most phones, open Settings › Apps (sometimes Apps & notifications › See all apps) to see every installed app, including ones without an icon. Menu names vary by phone maker.

Why it matters on Android

Plenty of apps have no icon for good reasons. System components, keyboard add-ons, background services and some apps that only work from inside another app never needed one.

Some monitoring apps hide their icon on purpose so the phone’s owner does not notice them. A hidden icon on an app you do not recognise is therefore worth a closer look. It matters more if the same app also has powerful access, such as the accessibility service, notification access or device admin, and was sideloaded.
